GENERAL NOTICE BULLETIN
Misuse of Installed Bent Tubes on Kirby Morgan® Helmets and BandMasks®
Products Affected: All Kirby Morgan® helmets and BandMasks® Recent inquiries have shown that there needs to be more clarity over what is acceptable when securing tools and/or lifting lines to bent tubes. The purpose of this notice is to clear up any confusion in this matter and make clear the recommendation and approved handling by Kirby Morgan®.
KMDSI DOES NOT RECOMMEND using the bent tube on our helmets and BandMasks® as a lifting or attachment point for tools and accessories. The Kirby Morgan® bent tube should remain free of attachments before, during, and after operation. DO NOT hang items from and do not lift from the bent tube. Hanging tools and lifting from the bent tube could cause undue damage, creating a potentially hazardous situation, which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.
Concerning Bent Tube Coverings
The person who does the pre- and post-dive checklists/inspections must verify the condition of the bent tube if it’s covered. Once the technician does that, it will be up to the company to allow a covering that can’t be inspected before each use and may trap moisture and dirt. One might consider a removable protector that can be removed or moved up or down on the bent tube to aid in pre- and post-dive inspections. This would ensure it is above the minimum for the replacement call out for the depth of damage found in the bent tube module and checklists.
NOTE: Replace the bent tube if it is excessively scratched, dented, or compressed deeper than 1/8″ (3.18 mm). Check for erosion of the metal or severe corrosion. Replace if any erosion is present or integrity is in question.
All diving personnel using Kirby Morgan® helmets and BandMasks® must understand how these systems work and how to handle and operate them properly.
